Overview

Ruth Laskey (b. 1975) lives and works in San Francisco, CA. Working within the textile tradition, her minimalist, abstract weavings are characterized by precise, geometric forms which explore color, shape, and the fundamentals of image making. Dedicated to tactile construction, Laskey utilizes both twill and plain weave patterns to create subtle spacial movements, color gradients, and dynamic lines which revel in the details left by the artist’s hand. Building her imagery into its own support by hand-dying her thread prior to weaving, Laskey subverts the ubiquitous dualism of figure and ground as a means to explore the limits of a textile-based practice.
